Babi Guling (Suckling Pig)
Suckling Pig or Babi Guling is one of the most famous cultural dishes is Bali. This delicacy is usually served during formal gatherings and special occasions, originally made as a ceremonial offering to the Gods, served whole to represent abundance. The pork is stuffed with base genep (a mix paste of Balinese spices) placed on a pit, and slow-roasted on an open fire until the skin turns amber-colored and crispy while the meat should remain juicy. The base genep gives the dish an earthy flavour that is popular with locals and visitors.
CANANG SARI
Canang Sari is a form of offering that represents a symbol of an unending gratitude and honor to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God), and to create a balance between all. As it is a sacred tradition, during the prayer procession and placing canang sari, the person in charge will need to wear a sarong and sash to show respect to the Gods. Canang sari usually contains various flowers with its own meanings that are placed in a specific way, snacks, coffee, cigarettes, and others.
Kecak Dance
Kecak Dance is one of Bali’s most prominent cultural showcases, and said to originate from an ancient ritual known as Sanghyang. First appearance of the dance can be traced by to 1930’s, when a Balinese dancer Wayan Limbak worked together with a German artist Walter Spies. Kecak dance is usually performed by more than a dozen dancers, with chorus of men continuously chanting during the performance instead of the traditional orchestra of “gamelan”.
GAMELAN
Gamelan is a term that describes the traditional musical ensemble in Bali and Java. It is an essential part of Balinese religious ceremony, as they believe that it’s one of the ways to show gratitude. It also forms an integral part of the daily life of the community, you can find it during the birth of a child, weddings, funerals, entertainment, and more.
